Learning Support Assistant - Reading Intervention

Learning Support Assistant –

READING interventions

Scale 6, term time only

Required for ASAP

London East AP (LEAP) is a successful, high-achieving KS3, KS4 and Post-16 alternative provision located in Tower Hamlets.

We are seeking to appoint a Learning Support Assistant to support our pupils with their reading skills at our KS3 and our KS4 centres in Bow and Stepney Green in Tower Hamlets.

This post involves spending short daily sessions with selected students whose reading ages are well below their chronological age and whose understanding of the world around them is limited due to their poor vocabulary and lack of ability to process information.

A good GCSE pass in English and Maths is essential for this role, the purpose of which is to support pupils with their reading skills, enabling them to take as full a part in the school curriculum as possible and ensuring that they make best possible progress whilst they are at LEAP.

We have two main reading programs at LEAP that support our students with their reading skills. You will be trained to enable you to assist our students with accessing those successfully.

At KS3 and KS4, the purpose of reading support is to plug the literacy gap many of our students have and enable them a more successful return to a mainstream school, leaving them more confident about accessing the curriculum in all subjects.

You will be required to record progress and report to and liaise with the literacy coordinator as well as our SENCOs. You will also play an important part in our literacy programme, which aims to equip all staff in using appropriate literacy strategies in the classroom.

We are looking for a team player who wants to share their love of reading with our students and understands the importance of literacy skills as a currency to success, be that in further education, employment or training.

We are looking for someone who is professional, friendly, reliable and able to build positive relationships with our often challenging and vulnerable pupils.

In order to be able to work with our students successfully, candidates must have strong literacy and numeracy skills and the academic ability to support students within the school curriculum which consists of GCSES, BTECs and Functional Skills.

This is a full-time post, term time only, and offered at SCALE 6.

Those wishing to be considered for the role should complete an application form and return to Kathryn Ryan, School Business Manager, by 12pm Monday, 23rd May 2022. Please be aware that we are unable to accept CVs.

We would welcome and encourage potential candidates to visit our schools. Please telephone or email to arrange this or for an application pack.

  • Closing date for applications: Monday, 23rd May 2022
  • Shortlisting of applications: Tuesday, 24th May 2022
  • Interviews: Friday, 27th May 2022
